Children with Special Needs

All children are God's children, including those who have special needs due to emotional, intellectual or physical disabilities. How we provide a safe and accessible environment as well as appropriate methods of learning and worship are important aspects of a church's educational ministry.

Here is a bibliography of materials for supporting your ministry with children who have special learning needs . . .

  • Key Ministry Foundation - Key Ministry's mission is to equip churches to welcome and include children and families affected by hidden disabilities in all aspects of the life of the church. Resources for ministry with special needs children within your church and for their families.
  • Rhythms of Grace - Rhythms of Grace is a program developed by educators in Connecticut in response to pastoral needs of families who have children with special needs. This Sunday afternoon model involves hearing a bible story, interaction with therapeutic arts & crafts projects and the sharing of Holy Communion in a child-friendly environment. The program especially supports children on the Autism Spectrum, but children with other special needs are encouraged to attend. A book about the program, with lesson plans, is forth-coming from Morehouse Education Resources in January 2010.
