DISCIPLE Bible Study
The DISCIPLE Bible Study program is designed to develop strong local churches through the in-depth study of Scripture. Through DISCIPLE, persons are strengthened in their faith and guided into service and ministry. Strong, biblically nourished leadership will help your church grow in vitality and Christian discipleship.BECOMING DISCIPLES THROUGH BIBLE STUDY uses biblical language and images and draws upon the work of scholars to aid understanding of the Bible. This study requires reading large portions of Scripture each week and is based on careful study and preparation. During the course of thirty-four weeks, groups will move through the biblical stories of Creation to the New Jerusalem. The titles of the sessions along with theme words; theme verses; and major persons, events, and topics will set the sequence of the biblical story in the minds of the participants. The principal Scripture for each session follows the chronological movement of the biblical story.
REMEMBER WHO YOU ARE is prepared for those who have completed BECOMING DISCIPLES THROUGH BIBLE STUDY. Resident in the title is the driving idea in this study--the connection between memory and identity as the people of God. The word You in the title is meant to be heard both in its singular form (the individual) and in its plural form (the community). We are a community of memory. Participants in this thirty-two-week study will read the major and minor Old Testament prophets, with the exception of Daniel, and will read the thirteen letters traditionally attributed to Paul. To establish the historical context in which the prophets spoke for God, daily reading assignments also draw on the books of Deuteronomy through Chronicles. Study of the prophets will follow their historical sequence rather than their biblical sequence. The dating of Paul’s letters influences the sequence of their study.
INTO THE WORD INTO THE WORLD encourages persons to open themselves to hearing what God has to say to them through the Bible and to be guided into service in the world by Scripture and their study of it. This thirty-two-week study selects specific portions of Scripture and delves deeper into them. Depth study of Scripture will be the work both of individual members and of the group in its weekly meeting. Equal attention is given to both the Old and New Testament with concentration on four books: Genesis, Exodus, Luke, and Acts (eight lessons on each book). Appropriate connections are made to other parts of Scripture both through reading and study assignments and through commentary in the study manual. Participants will read familiar passages, see them in fresh ways, and anticipate that God will speak through them.
UNDER THE TREE OF LIFE is a thirty-two-week study prepared for graduates of BECOMING DISCIPLES THROUGH BIBLE STUDY. The word Under in the title is meant to convey invitation, welcome, sheltering, security, and rest--home at last. Concentrates on the writings in the Old Testament – Ruth, 1 and 2 Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther, Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon, Lamentations, and Daniel. New Testament Scriptures include the Gospel of John; 1, 2, and 3 John; James; Jude; and Revelation.
Videos and manuals are part of the program.

Godly Play
What is Godly Play?
Godly Play (TM) teaches children the art of using religious language - parable, sacred story, silence and liturgical action - helping them become more fully aware of the mystery of God's presence in their lives. Based on the Montessori method, Godly Play invites children (ages 2-12) to wonder about themselves, God, and the world in a way that is playful and meaningful. Bible stories are told to children using objects called "artifacts" to encourage them to enter into the stories with a sense of wonder and awe and relate them to their personal experience.Where does Godly Play come from?
Developed by author, teacher and Episcopal priest, Jerome W. Berryman, Godly Playâ„¢ is offered throughout the United States within denominations as diverse and varied as Catholic, Baptist, Episcopal, Pentecostal, Lutheran, Presbyterian and Quaker (Friends). Designed for children aged two to twelve, Godly Playâ„¢ has been classroom tested since 1972. Deeply spiritual and highly creative, Godly Playâ„¢ is also used in schools, hospitals, homeless shelters, and retirement centers. Internationally, Godly Playâ„¢ classrooms are found in the United Kingdom, Finland, Germany, Canada, Tanzania, Australia, and in Spanish speaking countries. What is its theology / educational foundation?
Scripture is told through sacred stories (Old Testament), parables, and liturgical action, including about the Eucharist (Holy Communion) and Baptism. Biblical stories are told using a Montessori approach. Focus is on the child’s relationship to God, Jesus or the Holy Spirit and the characters and actions within the story. Godly Play™ teaches that everything in God's creation is charged with the possibility of holiness, including each of us, and that we are in relationship with everything in Creation. Godly Play™ teaches that there is Kairos (God’s time) time as well as Chronos (chronological/human) time. Each “lesson†is a worship service in itself, modeled after a Eucharist: a time for lesson / story, wondering / response, prayers, feast, and goodbye / blessing. What is the role of the teacher?
The teacher is one who loves religious language, trusts its creative power, and uses it to meet God at the limits of knowledge and being. A teacher needs to be comfortable in learning the stories to tell from memory and the ability to allow for silence and a child’s own creative response. Teachers do not interfere with the children’s work unless the child asks for help, although an adult should always be present to assist when needed. Teachers are seen as guides that do not have to have all the answers. Children have much to teach adults also. Training is most valuable – having the opportunity to attend a workshop or watch an experienced Godly Play storyteller. Besides the storyteller, another teacher role involves being the “doorperson†or greeter, who also assist the children with their art responses and “the feast.â€What does the “classroom†look like?
The classroom is a worship-education center; a place for children to be themselves that is respected as a space for community and open to the sacredness of God. The room contains shelves full of objects for children to use – images that make the stories come alive, a whole system of Christian language. The room holds a variety of art supplies for the children to use as they respond to the stories they hear. Because each child may be wrestling with different existential issues, each student will have a different response to the Bible stories told. Some may wish to work on the same story week after week. Stories are told using multi-sensory materials and a variety of media is available for their response. Craft activities are used, but differently than most curricula, with each child creating an expressive response to what is individually thought and felt after "receiving" the story in a group setting. The worship-education classroom is a safe space for children – a place where their ideas, opinions, and gifts are deeply respected. The materials / figures usually do not have faces on them, allowing children to project their own image / face on them. How does a lessons work?
After a bible story is told to the children, the storyteller and children use “wondering questions†to reflect on the story together. “I wonder what part of this story you liked best?†“I wonder if there is any part of the story we can leave out and still have all the story we need?†“I wonder, where are YOU in this story?†“I wonder where this place could really be?†Then each child chooses whether to respond to the story with art materials or play (work). Every child has a personal folder that serves as a spiritual journal, which stays in the room to hold their paintings, sketches, poetry, etc. that is ongoing work. How is the “curriculum†organized?
There is no particular order that stories are given in, which is left up to the discretion of the adult leaders. Many Old Testament stories are available, as well as parables and stories related to the church year, such as Lent, Advent and the church calendar. There is a set of stories for Jesus’ life and the life of Paul as well as many of the prophets. The books can be used to follow a particular order by season, if desired. What would be the best materials to start with?

About Rotation Model learning
The Workshop Rotation Model for Sunday School began in 1990 when a Presbyterian church in Chicago decided it was time to reinvent Sunday School or close it down. By 1995 enough churches in the Chicago area had successfully adopted the Model to call it a movement. www.rotation.org was created in 1997 to provide resources, lesson plans, and community for the grassroots movement. Many of the original Chicago Rotation educators began organizing conferences. Several started publishing ministries. As of 2005, it is estimated that over 8000 churches in the U.S. and Canada have now adopted or adapted the Model. And after a decade of showing little interest, several major denominational and independent publishers are now publishing Rotation-style curriculum. It's premise is that children learn by concentrating on the major stories of the Bible over and over again. The model's philosophy recognizes that kids not only love repetition, but they need it to develop a lasting memory and understanding of content. The multi-intelligences (creative methods) approach in the model isn't a fad or merely kid-friendly, it is calculated to take advantage of our student's God-given thirst for multi-modal learning.
Scriptural/Theological Content: Teach major Bible stories and concepts through kid-friendly multimedia workshops: an Art workshop, Drama, Music, Games, A-V, Puppets, Storytelling, Computers, and any other educational media you can get your hands on. Teach the same Bible story in all of the workshops for four or five weeks rotating the kids to a different workshop each week. Keep the same teacher in each workshop for all five weeks -teaching the same lesson week after week (with some age appropriate adjustments) to each new class coming in.
Each year is divided up into Cycles of 4 to 6 weeks long (or more) based on a theme of particular scripture. The model allows teachers to get better at their lesson. By the second week of the rotation, the teacher is already improving the original lesson plan for the next class. No more "if I only would have...." in the parking lot after class. No more Saturday night planning. No more recruitment hassles, --teachers are happy to sign up for five week rotations. And because the teacher is assigned to teach in the creative mode they are comfortable with, the teaching and learning experience are enriched. No more lectures and music cassettes still in their cellophane wrappers, no more overused worksheets, or fumbling popsicle stick Jesus' crafts.
Learning Activities, Format & Media: Modeled after Howard Gardiners theory of multiple intelligences, workshops use a variety of learning styles and experiential activities.
Dedicated space is needed. Each room is organized around a specific teaching medium, dramatic makeovers don't get torn down a week or a month later like they do in traditional classrooms or VBS. Theater workshops can sprout theater seats and a popcorn machine. Drama workshops get a stage and accumulate props and lighting. Computer workshops get dedicated secure space for their equipment. Art Workshops become messy exciting places to learn.

Journey to Adulthood
This comprehensive youth faith formation program (aka J2A) involves three components, each with its own developmentally appropriate means to address the focal points of the program: Self, Spirituality, Sexuality and Society. The foundational statement for the program is:
1. Manhood and Womanhood are gifts from God.
2. Adulthood must be earned."
Rites of passage are important and each of the three components to the program have their own rite associated with it. Pilgrimage also plays a key role - seeking God.
Rite-13: The first two years (6th & 7th or 7th & 8th graders) that focus on celebrating the individuality of each young person and their creative potential. The Rite-13 liturgy (A celebration of Manhood and Womanhood) is the community expression of this and a rite of passage form childhood towards adulthood .
J2A: The middle portion of the program (8th & 9th or 9th and 10th graders), engages youth with the skills and critical thinking involved in adulthood. The youth plan and embark on a pilgrimage together at the end of this segment. This experience is often the spiritual highlight of their youth.
YAC: This is a mentor-based program that helps older teens (11th and 12th graders) discern and carry out a ministry within their church or in the larger community. Vocation and development of a personal credo are also emphasized. A final rite of passage sends them out into the world as ambassadors of Christ.
J2A is based on the principles of relational youth ministry. It assumes that at least two or three adults (of both genders) will be leaders for each of the three groups and that these leaders will only serve for two years before taking a "break." This engages many more adults in building relationships with youth and providing positive role models for them. The traditional youth ministry model of a single youth "guru" (paid or volunteer) depends on the personality of that individual -- and when he/she leaves, the youth program often collapses. J2A is designed to engage lots of adults in nurturing the youth of your congregation and community. It is designed to bring young people into full participation in the life of the congregation so they actually ARE the church of today instead of the church of the future!
This program is a combination of traditional Sunday School AND Youth Group. Participants engage in both: meeting on Sunday mornings (or other time) and twice monthly on Sunday afternoons or evenings (or other time). Training is recommended. The entire congregation should get involved in understanding the program for it to achieve its fullest potential.

They simply need to be good listeners and open to their own spiritual growth.
